No, the Nottingham Boathouse is now in Omaha NE. We made the change in December.<br />
<br />
So what does this mean? Well, we'll still be building boats, but maybe we'll be looking at different kinds. After all there's no ocean, bays or sounds around here, but plenty of lakes and rivers. I sense that a smaller, more agile craft is in the making!
Stay tuned! As soon as the weather warms a bit, we'll start to see what comes out the doors.Stuart Nottinghamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08632907579729841331noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3754784474693154354.post-31300431460371989022010-04-18T12:37:00.003-04:002010-04-18T12:43:22.042-04:00Refinements<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbxkuHxyW3ewvC01SrFUZQHCywWgsIYyR9Qjn2UNRoW5MAsing57jmkauaWh-picKqmC2mb0mdakP0-zn_55_fUWA9yOLwiDf9bI8L1RcAT_fEa7Ou05-cfZXzDDUoQFydzo3aiInSLno/s1600/DSCF1452.JPG"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbxkuHxyW3ewvC01SrFUZQHCywWgsIYyR9Qjn2UNRoW5MAsing57jmkauaWh-picKqmC2mb0mdakP0-zn_55_fUWA9yOLwiDf9bI8L1RcAT_fEa7Ou05-cfZXzDDUoQFydzo3aiInSLno/s200/DSCF1452.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5461518854094672290" /></a><br />Added a couple of foam blocks to rest my knees against. Finished the swallowtail. Cut out the cockpit in the deck. Put the glass reinforcement around the coaming on the inside of the deck. Planed down the gunwales to accept the deck. And (just for grins) put the hull in the truck and it would appear that I'll be able to carry FOUR boats! Three on the rack and Moon Sprite in the bed. She doesn't extend much further out the back than Free Spirit does.<br /><table><br /><tr><br /><td><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbYWS8gThlYAvsreKhh4g0gBqYgEzs_3F6Ry_hoonCyDFhC4o6w3LpHq-2-zR47mU-yobaDRP0D8pS6NpJKHsHqL421O6QT0qNrX35pFvtvNYP0SZn7oDWH-ZfVR_xPxVZTFw9wCcb7Z0/s1600-h/IMG_0798.JPG"><img style="display:block; Some of the entries were there last year, but there were some new ones. I got a chance to see a Melonseed Skiff, a boat I was interested in. Here's some pics from the show.<br /><br><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEholLfC41LfddFRXTK26RBn3BDd0z7LjhIZ_acqrU_QpM7lRp2RaFWNQJtPQG0yDYijieYbAcK3NHqqY8B55aL6oo6lNNAs9tg3Dw1tfUzpQXpmyx6PIceHEu9UD68KjeE_I1deToexOmg/s1600-h/IMG_0032.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEholLfC41LfddFRXTK26RBn3BDd0z7LjhIZ_acqrU_QpM7lRp2RaFWNQJtPQG0yDYijieYbAcK3NHqqY8B55aL6oo6lNNAs9tg3Dw1tfUzpQXpmyx6PIceHEu9UD68KjeE_I1deToexOmg/s200/IMG_0032.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5261183692086895170" /></a><br />This is the Melonseed.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-QnlW255y4GNjyRxLIId5j65_5-2Pjc1ClSHFpzThUE7xQlciRww6ik3aiam_qZ_AMQZDrJWGpA54WVohe-GJiHEsqsfiuxn8_pPLWjDAMcYH_A7-yQS938w2SuqrnaNAaFBDFWE_Q3I/s1600-h/IMG_0006.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-QnlW255y4GNjyRxLIId5j65_5-2Pjc1ClSHFpzThUE7xQlciRww6ik3aiam_qZ_AMQZDrJWGpA54WVohe-GJiHEsqsfiuxn8_pPLWjDAMcYH_A7-yQS938w2SuqrnaNAaFBDFWE_Q3I/s200/IMG_0006.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5261184147132456066" /></a><br />In my opinion, the prettiest boat at the show.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjawF5NjtBqgRrj7VjA2oe4SL5eqI6F3vl3C1iQeSHh_cdPiENIzt7qvP0IYNC0wrZ7GSkI1Ix04DxyBsBt36L5i2H5SIrEgBUuyCn-JNHiXOQYCGKUuyD7nhMU7FoCsNpJbqVkbff8SNc/s1600-h/IMG_0036.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjawF5NjtBqgRrj7VjA2oe4SL5eqI6F3vl3C1iQeSHh_cdPiENIzt7qvP0IYNC0wrZ7GSkI1Ix04DxyBsBt36L5i2H5SIrEgBUuyCn-JNHiXOQYCGKUuyD7nhMU7FoCsNpJbqVkbff8SNc/s200/IMG_0036.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5261184619745431202" /></a><br />"Coastie", a radio-controlled USCG road boat that was a hit with the kids.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGZ1wQR-teYd3KnSiYo-pdVAnaF-AhQqLLeB2PDLHwhWMw4m5ENUdevnQcFgNMRAWgGkawR6iEFq8PT-AccvBhktLVR7Mu42_D-6XbnPlb1K94vZYpdK7MwTauQptghh3mMxCwO34J-3A/s1600-h/IMG_0024.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGZ1wQR-teYd3KnSiYo-pdVAnaF-AhQqLLeB2PDLHwhWMw4m5ENUdevnQcFgNMRAWgGkawR6iEFq8PT-AccvBhktLVR7Mu42_D-6XbnPlb1K94vZYpdK7MwTauQptghh3mMxCwO34J-3A/s200/IMG_0024.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5261185396812535042" /></a><br />The CSS Albemarle, a Confederate ironclad (actually, a replica). Last night, I rough cut the transoms from 1/2" ply. Since both the bow and stern are flat, there won't be a stem to cut. Tonight, I planed both down to their proper dimensions; they'll have to be "refined" a bit when the pieces start to come together.<br /><br />Here's a pic of how they look: bow on the left, stern on the right, with the drawings in between.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqDr_OclqqhaqZadHsoEDDOY2DxtOqh9Jo4-x3l0FkJEcLwhyphenhyphen1tqPAJKqUpfQk5qnZ6H5HJoZkKJi0Vzeq3sI3eqNY5IDRRhD-t_0OCeRDVjkWOuxX3BjPTw5m8-Qhy_SsUoA75hRzRzY/s1600-h/IMG_0003.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqDr_OclqqhaqZadHsoEDDOY2DxtOqh9Jo4-x3l0FkJEcLwhyphenhyphen1tqPAJKqUpfQk5qnZ6H5HJoZkKJi0Vzeq3sI3eqNY5IDRRhD-t_0OCeRDVjkWOuxX3BjPTw5m8-Qhy_SsUoA75hRzRzY/s200/IMG_0003.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260120286141744674" /></a><br /><br />Also today, I made the front page of the <a href="http://www.thefranklintimes.com">Franklin Times</a>. I bought the plywood for this small rowing boat a few weeks ago and decided to start cutting the necessary panels today.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrCnL5YGfx8xD7UGEADtmPajaMD9ADogTiAjJkriVOsNiB8iMkB32pM_i3ng_o481bk_q4XYJ13KPaaRsJLPAeaVUQFHf8CwUe5C5x8FYX_pKcTidh-z_h4BJsygq_CsRX1K2Mj8y1Zso/s1600-h/IMG_0001.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrCnL5YGfx8xD7UGEADtmPajaMD9ADogTiAjJkriVOsNiB8iMkB32pM_i3ng_o481bk_q4XYJ13KPaaRsJLPAeaVUQFHf8CwUe5C5x8FYX_pKcTidh-z_h4BJsygq_CsRX1K2Mj8y1Zso/s200/IMG_0001.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5259023934208374978" /></a><br />Here you can see the bottom and two sides. These were cut from 1/4" ply. It took longer to draw and fair the curves than it took to cut and plane the panels themselves. I cut one side, then used it as a template to cut the other. <br /><br />I'm going to be right busy working over the next couple of weeks. The Plymouth, NC boatshow is next Saturday, and I'm planning on attending that. Next week, I'll be in Northern VA and Laurel MD for the whole week. I doubt much will be done on the project before I get back. If I do get fortunate enough to work on it, I'll post the progress here.Stuart Nottinghamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08632907579729841331noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3754784474693154354.post-52358116204265174672008-10-12T20:21:00.003-04:002008-10-13T09:53:21.220-04:00Hello Again!!Been a while since I've posted. For those of you who may not know, lofting is the process of taking the specifications from a set of plans and creating full-sized drawings.<br /><br />Learned a lot in the class and enjoyed watching the boats. I particularly liked this one. According to one of the guys in the Watercraft Center, this boat is from the 1930's or 40's. That makes it about the same time that my Granddad Jack would have had his boat. <br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsJEpjjHsVdIRSEwvQ-JhoF-OnvQT_ZP1AcD6CqE5yHINnI_EGer-9L4CpPFrYxnBPepOCesl8CgqeuZK2d281HavVhWCWKUcr2LWNVwE6lIe_uyEK56Bt3G3zkQHTO18A8syvPhHAHp4/s1600-h/IMG_0591.JPG"><img style="display:block; My entry method doesn't match ANYTHING the books tell you to do, but it works. Next boat will have a cockpit custom-sized for me; at this point, it's not the girth of my waist in the way, but the length of my legs. This is one of those times I'd laugh when someone says "Boy, I wish I was as tall as you are!"<br /><br />Headed up to WV for a few days on business. Will be back for the 4th and S3's visit with his family.<br /><br />All for now.Stuart Nottinghamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08632907579729841331noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3754784474693154354.post-90991801326002665762008-05-28T13:38:00.002-04:002008-05-28T13:44:11.907-04:00Yet More ModificationShould have posted this on Monday, but got side-tracked. I took the boat out again on Monday evening and found that, while I was able to get into the cockpit, I still scraped my shins. You will recall that I enlarged the front of the cockpit by an inch and removed part of the lowest lamination of the forward beam. The scrape was being caused by what remained of that lamination.<br /><br />So back to the house and up on the sawhorses goes the boat. Did some liberal (albeit, careful) work with the mallet and chisel to remove what remained of the lamination. Then took the trusty belt sander and smoothed it all out.<br /><br />Had hoped to get to the water this evening, but the weather gods are in the way. Maybe it'll clear out before sunset.<br /><br />I have ordered a cockpit cover (for when it's traveling on the truck) and a sprayskirt (for when I'm traveling in it). Cover should be delivered tomorrow. No ETA as yet on the sprayskirt.<br /><br />So far, I've had a ball!Stuart Nottinghamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08632907579729841331noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3754784474693154354.post-59314605047641967402008-05-18T13:51:00.003-04:002008-05-18T13:59:51.094-04:00Did I Say I Was Finished?After a not-so-successful outing this morning, I came back home with some ideas on modifying the cockpit to make entry and exit easier. Before I get any comments, let me acknowledge that if I was about 30 lbs. lighter these changes wouldn't be necessary. I won't bore you with pictures; you can look at my shins from the initial launch (March 21, 2008) and see what they look like now.<br /><br />First thing I did (after screwing up the courage) was cut 1/4" from around the front of the cockpit. Then I carved out the bottom lamination of the front beam. The plans called for three, I put in four for strength. My bad. Finally, I took the seat out and replaced it with a foam pad velcroed to the back of the cockpit. Actually more comfortable (for me, at least). Tried a "dry" entry and it was much easier.<br /><br />Now I'm off to work on the rain barrels. Need to see if I can get someone to accompany me to the lake next weekend to try out what I've changes. I'm not going ot finish (i.e., epoxy and varnish) until I'm sure it will work.Stuart Nottinghamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08632907579729841331noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3754784474693154354.post-10437600751331147282008-05-16T16:31:00.001-04:002008-05-16T16:32:03.353-04:00New Future ProjectI added the link to the Apple Pie Yacht Tender. Stuart III, Jerri, and Josie went down to the lake with Janet and I to see if 11 months of work stayed above the surface. I was the first to give it a try, followed by III. Then Jerri got into the kayak and put both of us to shame. I'm figuring I'll get better at it with practice.<br /><table><br /><tbody><tr><td><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgN8fdcxu0GbiaMnERajUPNLD-6gAGTNTytoZau7NGTjyoX3x9xnmystnOvi6vNnfAn1FVn5Z60SiA9UHs-UQk3H-FaBU3HuG25EsmZ3sJI4ROpAmJmHwsEB7BwC18gZGONWcqEpLrGfYU/s1600-h/IMG_0413.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgN8fdcxu0GbiaMnERajUPNLD-6gAGTNTytoZau7NGTjyoX3x9xnmystnOvi6vNnfAn1FVn5Z60SiA9UHs-UQk3H-FaBU3HuG25EsmZ3sJI4ROpAmJmHwsEB7BwC18gZGONWcqEpLrGfYU/s200/IMG_0413.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5180232044611590450" border="0"></a></td><br /><td><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKd9lzaeynYp0ozwi8eZUVg0w7xUTcSrCezmk24zEC7L5KyFm0uYImeRhbArqTcn2nph1oXmQoiTMLIQNTHk2ASI9jS1uHRMPyWYyBGYWuQrc4j2_J89J_QuTyNySY5QqtvHgaMZEAcVs/s1600-h/IMG_0406.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKd9lzaeynYp0ozwi8eZUVg0w7xUTcSrCezmk24zEC7L5KyFm0uYImeRhbArqTcn2nph1oXmQoiTMLIQNTHk2ASI9jS1uHRMPyWYyBGYWuQrc4j2_J89J_QuTyNySY5QqtvHgaMZEAcVs/s200/IMG_0406.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5180231417546365218" border="0"></a></td></tr><br /><tr><td><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzF4-9Oa_AvaMNZOaNEStFU0p3tx6bpibcYTn-fqLYfSUOaFpx9vy77eIIU4iBkz4YfJnihD0Ev-C77iMtto8NbrkBpIgqqg022G7w2-qVcB2bb9oGqnfa2Ar6RIdXGsOSYkkBxYG2Xno/s1600-h/DSC_6925.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzF4-9Oa_AvaMNZOaNEStFU0p3tx6bpibcYTn-fqLYfSUOaFpx9vy77eIIU4iBkz4YfJnihD0Ev-C77iMtto8NbrkBpIgqqg022G7w2-qVcB2bb9oGqnfa2Ar6RIdXGsOSYkkBxYG2Xno/s200/DSC_6925.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5180237086903195986" border="0"></a></td><br /><td><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKBRLVAb7Em7k0WbiFhWsCNXMjIQnQYOy2HkauwrhMkpOXt9yMqmGZj6pcTLDUSBl5Ens5ypKUkCTcPx7Lyjqd1qusaRkI0J2rNv_IcJv8NPGfHajawY9djzNCb1wqccuvGd_dG_VkmnU/s1600-h/DSC_6920.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKBRLVAb7Em7k0WbiFhWsCNXMjIQnQYOy2HkauwrhMkpOXt9yMqmGZj6pcTLDUSBl5Ens5ypKUkCTcPx7Lyjqd1qusaRkI0J2rNv_IcJv8NPGfHajawY9djzNCb1wqccuvGd_dG_VkmnU/s200/DSC_6920.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5180236575802087746" border="0"></a></td></tr><br /></tbody></table><br /><br />Of course, it wouldn't be complete unless blood (mine) was spilled.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPFZ86wiR6co7SZ3GJG5KiaBTJ8rq0nAJDYyVmg2WgxZYJlShpL2GbqrSsktYAjhxOMAhAX0_RENw97lwRGVAH_lxJWc1oWSet-mzJNXQmOkTu4hdocq76T_k8xqGV5qqQmf8dOY-DWxQ/s1600-h/DSC_6927.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPFZ86wiR6co7SZ3GJG5KiaBTJ8rq0nAJDYyVmg2WgxZYJlShpL2GbqrSsktYAjhxOMAhAX0_RENw97lwRGVAH_lxJWc1oWSet-mzJNXQmOkTu4hdocq76T_k8xqGV5qqQmf8dOY-DWxQ/s200/DSC_6927.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5180237748328159586" border="0"></a><br />Here's a short video of Stu-3 in the kayak.<br /><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dxbSQqsnsemmuqupzokYnybfIocbxk33xqfR7vMrmZCeBrD03kNuVVxUhXPz8UBxWERmfeE9c2lzsL7Chh08Q' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe>Stuart Nottinghamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08632907579729841331noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3754784474693154354.post-87000569475529626052008-03-06T19:38:00.003-05:002008-11-13T14:15:08.218-05:00IT'S A BOAT!!!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQ_VaTGulatGA5cOBFttsPYIUduKBHaasT8evYgZBJcreDbSzAc-TQbWgZi03kmFCplQepvbr6Lq3NlA9SN_L-MTFiOxQRfq33w7nzaaIdsyrtlj315ccof3axbMIx85AdFf96owU8Fdo/s1600-h/IMG_0397.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQ_VaTGulatGA5cOBFttsPYIUduKBHaasT8evYgZBJcreDbSzAc-TQbWgZi03kmFCplQepvbr6Lq3NlA9SN_L-MTFiOxQRfq33w7nzaaIdsyrtlj315ccof3axbMIx85AdFf96owU8Fdo/s200/IMG_0397.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5174793757158859202" /></a><br />Well, it's been almost a year, but the kayak is finally done!!
